but she also had roles in a dozen movies and a few television shows before she announced her retirement from acting in 1968 so that she could focus on managing a theatrical agency.
Johnston made his West End debut in a supporting role in the comedy-thriller Saloon Bar in 1939. She then worked in repertory theatre for a while before being cast in a 1942 production of Murder Without Crime at London’s Comedy Theatre.
The production lasted over a year and was a box office success. At the Phoenix Theatre in 1944, Johnston co-starred with Fay Compton in The Last of Summer.
Her performance, particularly in an acrimonious verbal duel with Compton at the play’s climax, drew the attention of influential theatrical impresario Binkie Beaumont, who signed her for his agency H.M. Tennent Ltd., London’s leading theatrical management company at the time.
