Roy McGrath, the former top aide to ex-Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, made headlines when he failed to appear in court for the start of his criminal trial on fraud and other charges.
After a month-long search, McGrath was found and engaged in a confrontation with the FBI, which resulted in his death.
Who Was Roy McGrath?
Roy McGrath was an experienced public and private sector leader, having served as the chief executive officer of Maryland Environmental Service before being appointed as Chief of Staff to Governor Larry Hogan.
McGrath had a proven track record of managing at every level of government, making him an ideal candidate for the role.
McGrath started his work as chief of staff on June 1, 2020, but resigned on August 17, 2020, following criticism over a severance package he received from the Maryland Environmental Service. This sparked controversy and led to further scrutiny of his actions.
In March 2023, Roy McGrath faced criminal charges for wire fraud and embezzlement, having allegedly stolen $276,000 from the State of Maryland.
Despite pleading not guilty to the charges, McGrath failed to appear in court for the start of his criminal trial on March 13, 2023.
