Biography of John Defterios

John Defterios is a well-known journalist who works as CNN Business’ Emerging Markets Editor and Anchor. Having joined the network in 1992, he has already accumulated several years of experience reporting from the Middle East, Africa and Asia. In addition, he has gained a reputation for his exclusive interviews, including the Saudi Energy Minister Ali al Naimi and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Born on April 7, 1961, John Defterios has lived in many countries and is a member of the Global Agenda Council for the Arab World. Before joining CNN, he was a European Correspondent and worked in the U.S. West Coast. During the PBS Nightly Business Report, he produced a special series about the economic embargo against Qatar. His background in journalism is extensive, and he has been a member of numerous organizations and media organizations.

Defterios has been married twice. His first wife, Manuela Mirkos, worked for The New York Times and was a freelance journalist. The two were married in a Greek Orthodox ceremony on the island of Sifnos in 2005. A priest, Rev. Nikolaos Mavroyiannis, officiated the ceremony. His second wife, Annabelle Argiou, is a former assistant to the prime minister of the Netherlands and Greece.
