Why did Phoebe Cates retire?
Cates’ decision to step away from the spotlight was primarily motivated by the birth of her family. Actor Kevin Kline, who was a member of the entire Baby Boomer cast, met Cates while attending an audition for the 1983 movie The Big Chill.
Even though Meg Tilly won the role, Cates left with something more: an immediate bond with Kline. The two appeared to be an unlikely couple because they were 16 years apart in age.
Kline was a highly regarded Juilliard-trained theater performer before he met Cates. He had won two Tony Awards and gained notoriety in Hollywood by co-starring with Meryl Streep in Sophie’s Choice, which received positive reviews.
Before landing her big break in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Cates, on the other hand, had dropped out of high school to pursue modeling and party at Studio 54.
