Brianna Lopez, known as “Baby Brianna,” was born on February 14, 2002. Five months later, she died at the hands of her mother.
Two skull fractures, as well as fractured ribs, legs, and an arm, were among Baby Brianna injuries. Her face and body were covered in bruises and 15 human bite marks. She had been sexually assaulted as well.
Stephanie Rene Lopez, the Las Cruces mother who was convicted in the cruel 2002 death of her 512-month-old daughter, Brianna Lopez, is expected to be released later this month after serving less than half of her 27-year sentence.
Lopez is scheduled to be freed from jail on Sept. 25, according to New Mexico Corrections Department spokesperson Ashley Espinoza, though that date is subject to change.
“This is not a firm release date, and it is subject to change,” Espinoza stated in an email. “Her release is influenced by her ability to make good time.”
Stephanie Lopez, Andy Walters, and Steven Lopez were found guilty in Brianna’s killing in September 2003. Stephanie Lopez was found guilty of child abuse and negligent child abuse resulting in death.
Steven Lopez, Brianna’s uncle, was found guilty of first-degree criminal sexual penetration, conspiracy to commit child abuse leading in death, and intentional child abuse resulting in death. He was given a 57-year jail sentence.
Brianna’s father, Walters, was found guilty on two charges of child abuse, conspiracy to commit child abuse resulting in death, first-degree criminal sexual penetration, and intentional child abuse resulting in death. He was given a 63-year jail sentence.
