Elma Kate Victoria Karkeek was born on December 16, 1887 in Port Augusta, South Australia. Violet Hopson was her stage name, but she was known to her family as Kate or Kitty when she was younger.

Hopson’s first stage appearances were with Pollard’s Lilliputian Opera Company in Australia and New Zealand from 1898 to 1900. Her sisters, Zoe Karkeek and Wilmot Karkeek, had been with the company since 1892. She traveled to the United States with her older sister Zoe in the early 1900s, and then to Britain.

Hopson made the announcement that Violet Hopson Productions would be her own production firm in early 1919.
