Vince McMahon’s career explored
Vince McMahon first met the promoter for Capitol Wrestling Corporation (CWC), his father, Vincent J. McMahon, when he was 12. McMahon pushed for the renaming of the company to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF).
In 1979, the younger McMahon and his wife, Linda, founded their own company, Titan Sports. In 1985, he ran the first WrestleMania at Madison Square Garden, available on closed-circuit television in various markets throughout the United States. McMahon introduced WWF programming to TBS on Black Saturday, upon the WWF’s acquisition of Georgia Championship Wrestling’s Saturday night timeslot.
He portrayed himself originally as mild-mannered and diplomatic but from 1984 onwards as easily excited and over-the-top. Most of his on-screen physicality came during his “Mr. McMahon” character, but he was involved in physical altercations on WWF television only a few times.
McMahon launched the XFL, a professional American football league that folded after one season due to low television ratings. McMahon was “damn sick and tired” of seeing Stone Cold Steve Austin as the WWF Champion and developed a plan to remove him. In 1998, he hired The Undertaker and Kane to help him win the championship from Austin.
McMahon turned on Mankind after a screwjob, however, as The Rock had caught Mankind in the Sharpshooter.
This was a homage to the “Montreal Screwjob” that occurred one year earlier. McMahon returned as a heel in 1999 and helped The Rock win his WWF title shot back from the Big Show. At Armageddon, McMahon faced Triple H in a No Holds Barred match which he lost.
This began the McMahon-Helmsley Era, which saw McMahon turn on his son Shane and turn heel again. McMahon was absent from WWF television until late 2000, when he allied with Stone Cold Steve Austin to gain the WWF Championship back from The Rock.
