In a 1995 letter to The New York Times, he pledged to “desist from terrorism” in exchange for the publication of his essay Industrial Society and Its Future, in which he made the extreme but necessary claim that his bombings were required to draw attention to how contemporary technologies that demand mass organization are eroding human freedom and dignity.

Up until that time, Kaczynski had been the focus of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s longest and most expensive investigation.

Industrial Society and Its Future, which was published in The Washington Post in September 1995, was promoted for publication by the FBI and Attorney General Janet Reno.

Kaczynski attempted and failed to oust his court-appointed attorneys after his arrest in 1996 on the grounds that they wanted him to claim insanity in order to avoid the death penalty while keeping his sanity.
