Roy McGrath, a prominent figure in Maryland politics and former top aide to ex-Governor Larry Hogan, has died following a confrontation with the FBI near Knoxville, Tennessee.

Roy McGrath had been on the run for 21 days after failing to show up for the start of his criminal trial on fraud and embezzlement charges in March 2023.

McGrath began his career as a management consultant after earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Towson University. He later entered public service as the Chief Executive Officer of Maryland Environmental Service in 2016, where he oversaw the state’s environmental initiatives and waste and recycling programs.

In 2017, he was appointed senior advisor to the governor, deputy chief of staff, and liaison to the Maryland Board of Public Works.

However, in 2020, he resigned from his position as Hogan’s chief of staff after it was revealed that he had received a large severance package from the Maryland Environmental Service when he left his position as CEO.

McGrath’s downfall began in March 2023 when he was indicted on charges of wire fraud and embezzlement, accused of stealing $276,000 from the State of Maryland and using the money to pay for personal expenses. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was scheduled to stand trial in federal court in Baltimore.

However, when the trial began on March 13, McGrath failed to show up, prompting law enforcement agencies to launch a manhunt for him.

After 21 days on the run, the FBI located him near Knoxville, Tennessee, on April 3, 2023.

During the confrontation, McGrath sustained a gunshot wound, and it is unclear whether it was self-inflicted or the result of an exchange of gunfire with FBI agents.

His death brings an end to a controversial and scandalous chapter in Maryland politics, leaving many unanswered questions and a legacy tarnished by allegations of corruption.
