His background as a business owner
After being named the winner of the February primary, Mitchel Craig easily defeated Rick Dodd for the job of mayor of Portage.
He won with 59 percent of the vote and will complete the term of Tom Barrett, who is serving his fourth term.

As a business owner, Craig has many advantages over Whitmer. He was previously the police chief for the city of Portage. He served as its police chief from June 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018.
In his campaign, Craig read prepared remarks from a teleprompter and took selfies with supporters, but did not declare his expected presidential bid.
Craig described himself as a “two-time Trump voter” who opposes abortion.
He also supports gun rights. He wore a blue suit jacket and twice pulled a concealed pistol.
