Michael Julius Schildberger was a journalist, radio and television presenter, and author from Australia. In the 1970s, he was best known for hosting A Current Affair. Schildberger began his media career in 1955 as a copy boy for The Sun News-Pictorial and later as a cadet reporter. He moved to GTV 9 in 1958 and stayed for the next twenty years.
He was the executive producer and national host of A Current Affair in the 1970s. He won a Logie Award for Best TV Interviewer in 1976 for this role. He conducted the first full-length television interview with singer-songwriter Neil Diamond, who had previously only done brief group press conferences, while at A Current Affair. The interview took place in conjunction with Diamond’s “Thank You Australia” tour and nationally broadcast live concert in 1975-76.
He founded the media production company Business Essentials in 1984. In 1997, Schildberger was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He was cured and became an outspoken supporter of positron emission tomography. In early 2010, the cancer returned. Schildberger died on June 2, 2010, at the Cabrini Hospital in Prahran.
