However, Leclerc’s hopes of finishing on the podium were dashed when a mechanical issue forced him to retire from the race with just 16 laps remaining.

“It was a very good first stint where I basically made my gap,” he said. “
From there it was just about looking after the tires because you never know what is going to happen later in the race, so we just wanted to make sure that we had the right tires and in good condition as well.
I was also very happy to finally win here in Bahrain.”
Alonso’s impressive performance deserves a special mention, as the 41-year-old driver overtook his compatriot Carlos Sainz of Ferrari to claim the final podium spot.
Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Mercedes’ Hamilton and Russell all exchanged places in the lower half of the top 10 throughout the race.
