A Tribeca resident acknowledged on Friday that he had beaten and slit his mother’s neck in order to claim his inheritance.
As part of a plea agreement for the horrific murder of Paula Chin, 65, in January 2019, Jared Eng, 25, pled guilty to one count of murder in Manhattan Supreme Court.
In an effort to speed up the process of receiving his inheritance, Eng brutally assaulted and cut his mother during an argument in the Tribeca apartment they shared. He claimed she had $11 million in the bank.
Eng cleaned the flat with his girlfriend Jennifer Lopez after the horrifying tragedy. The two then drove Chin’s 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser to the Morristown, New Jersey, family home to deliver his mother’s remains.
The following February 1, Eng’s other lover Caitlyn O’Rourke joined the pair in New Jersey, where she assisted in stuffing Chin’s body into a trash can that was left on the premises.
When Eng’s elder brother Brandon reported their mother missing, police the next day discovered her decaying remains in the trash.
Blood streaks on the garage floor of the New Jersey home and bloody rubber gloves in the trash were discovered by investigators. Inside the Tribeca flat, blood traces and additional bloody gloves were discovered.
After the murder, Eng sent a string of texts that included the phrases “It’s done,” “I’m free,” and “got rid of [his] problem,” according to the prosecution.
He then started altering Chin’s bank account passwords, looking for inheritance attorneys, and learning how to properly dispose of his mother’s body, including a terrifying Google search for “DIY bone meal.”
The defendant’s mother was brutally and shockingly murdered, and while nothing can heal this sorrow, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg said in a statement that today’s guilty plea “represents an important step towards justice.”
Lopez and O’Rourke are charged with lesser crimes, including the concealment of a human corpse. Their cases are still pending.
Eng’s attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.
He’s scheduled to be sentenced to a minimum of 18 years to life in prison on Oct. 18.
