Bill Richardson is a Former Governor of New Mexico and a former United States Ambassador to the United Nations. He is an American diplomat who has played a major role in bringing Americans who have been convicted in other countries back home. His negotiations and appeals led to the release of former U.S Marine, Trevor Reed who was detained for more than two years in Russia.
The Brittney Griner Exchange
Brittney Griner, a WNBA All-Star and Olympic gold medalist, has been detained by Russian authorities since February after vape cartridges with cannabis oil were allegedly found in her luggage.
Griner pleaded guilty to the charges but insisted she had packed them mistakenly and harbored no criminal intentions for doing so. The 31 year-old, seven time WNBA All-star was however still sentenced to nine years imprisonment by a Russian court.
Bill Richardson recently left the United States for Moscow, Russia for what is believed to be an official meeting to negotiate a prisoner exchange with their leaders.
Although it has not been officially confirmed, many believe that Richardson’s visit to Russia is to find a way to bring Griner and former US Marine, Paul Whalen back onto U.S soil.
