Theis signed with the NBA’s Boston Celtics for four seasons until being traded to the Chicago Bulls in March 2021. In August 2021, the Bulls moved Theis to the Houston Rockets, who then traded him back to the Boston Celtics in February 2022.

Theis was moved to the Chicago Bulls in a three-team deal with the Washington Wizards on March 25, 2021. By the 12th of April, he had earned a starting position against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Theis scored 23 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists in a 110–102 victory over the Miami Heat on April 26.Theis was traded to the Houston Rockets via sign-and-trade on August 7, 2021.

The Celtics re-acquired Theis from the Rockets on February 10, 2022 in exchange for Bruno Fernando, Enes Freedom, and Dennis Schroder.
