Why Test Scores Matter

We believe that standardized test scores are important because they provide us with a standard metric that we can use to compare students from different high schools and backgrounds.

This helps us to assess a student’s academic abilities in a fair and objective manner. In addition, we believe that test scores are a good predictor of a student’s success in college.

While we understand that test scores are not the only indicator of academic ability, they are an important piece of the puzzle.

Test Scores and the Admissions Process

At the University of California, we require applicants to submit either the ACT with Writing or the SAT with Essay.

We also require two SAT Subject Tests in areas that are relevant to the student’s intended major.

While we understand that not all students have had the opportunity to take these tests, we encourage all applicants to do so if they are able.

We also understand that some students may have had extenuating circumstances that prevented them from taking these tests.

In these cases, we will consider alternative evidence of academic ability, such as AP test scores, IB test scores, or other measures of academic achievement.

Test Preparation

We understand that standardized tests can be stressful, but we believe that preparation is key to success.

There are many resources available to help students prepare for the ACT, SAT, and SAT Subject Tests, including online practice tests, study guides, and tutoring services.

We encourage students to take advantage of these resources and to start preparing for these tests early.

Submitting Test Scores

When submitting test scores to the University of California, it is important to follow our guidelines carefully.

We only accept official scores sent directly from the testing agency. We do not accept self-reported scores or scores submitted through a high school transcript.

In addition, we require that scores be submitted by our application deadline. Late scores will not be considered.
