Smith was the first overall pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft by the Spokane Chiefs. Smith was named the Chiefs’ Rookie of the Year and Scholastic Player of the Year during his rookie season. Smith had a breakout season the following year, setting a new franchise record for most points in a single game by a defenseman and being named the WHL Scholastic Player of the Year. Smith was also named Chiefs Defensive Player of the Year.
