Sir Keir Rodney Starmer KCB QC is a British politician and former lawyer who has been the Labour Party’s Leader and Opposition Leader since 2020.
Since 2015, he has served as the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras.
Starmer was born in London and raised in Surrey, where he attended Reigate Grammar School, a selective state school that later became an independent school while he was a student.
He earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Leeds in 1985 and a postgraduate Bachelor of Civil Law degree from St Edmund Hall, Oxford, in 1986.
Before being named a Queen’s Counsel (QC) in 2002, Starmer worked exclusively as a defense lawyer, specializing in human rights issues as a member of Doughty Street Chambers.

Keir Starmer is the second of four children born to Rodney and Josephine Starmer.The family lived in Surrey and were staunch Labour Party supporters.
Although they would not discuss politics at the dinner table, Rodney and Josephine named their son after the party’s first parliamentary leader, Keir Hardie.
Josephine worked as a nurse and Rodney as a factory toolmaker, and the Starmers lived in Surrey.
