Sir James William Alexander Burnet, better known as Alastair Burnet, was a British journalist and broadcaster best known for his work in news and current affairs programs,
including a long career with ITN as the chief presenter of the flagship News at Ten; Sir Robin Day referred to Burnet as “the booster rocket that put ITN into orbit.” Burnet was also a well-known print journalist who served as the editor of The Economist and the Daily Express.
Burnet resigned from the ITN board of directors in February 1990, citing a disagreement over the company’s future ownership and the rejection of his own reorganization suggestions.
He left ITN after 18 months as a newscaster and assistant editor, broadcasting his farewell episode of News at Ten on August 29, 1991.
