Robert Fisher is a semi-retired Canadian radio and television journalist. He wrote his master’s thesis on the then-emerging phenomenon of women in politics as a journalism student in the 1960s. His first journalism job was with CHWO, a local radio station in Oakville, Ontario, where he started in 1967.
Fisher worked for CBC Television as a Queen’s Park reporter and Dateline Ontario host for CBLT in the 1980s before joining the Global Television Network in 1988. In the 1980s and 1990s, he hosted and produced the weekend program Focus Ontario on CIII. He was also the network’s first Queen’s Park Bureau Chief, a late-night and weekend news anchor, and an occasional First National substitute anchor.
He served on the journalist’s panel for the election debates in the 1987 provincial election as a representative of the CBC, and in the 1990, 1995, and 1999 provincial elections for Global. Some Liberals thought his final question to Ontario Liberal Party leader Dalton McGuinty in the 1999 debate was unfair. He also served as an analyst for the network’s coverage of the 1988, 1993, and 1997 federal elections. He was fired from Global in 2000 after he criticized the network’s shift toward infotainment reporting.
