James Peter Kent PC (born July 27, 1943) is a former Canadian journalist and politician who represented the Conservative Party in the Thornhill riding from 2008 to 2021.

In the 28th Canadian Ministry, he was the Minister of the Environment. He worked as the Deputy Editor of the Global Television Network, a Canadian television network, before entering politics.

On Canadian and American television networks, he has worked as a news editor, producer, foreign correspondent, and news anchorman.

Kent was born in a Canadian Army hospital in Sussex, England. Both of his parents were in the Canadian Army at the time. The family immigrated to Canada and settled in Medicine Hat, Alberta, after a brief stay in Ottawa.

Aileen Marie (née Fears) and Arthur Parker Kent, both both deceased, were his parents. The older Kent worked for the Southam Newspaper Group for many years and retired as associate editor of the Calgary Herald.

Arthur Kent, Peter Kent’s younger brother, is also a journalist and was dubbed the “scud stud” during the first Gulf War.
