Michel David-Weill, the Paris-born heir to the Lazard banking dynasty who operated the investment bank as a tightly held family firm for the previous quarter-century until his successor, Bruce Wasserstein, brought it public in 2005, has died. He was 89 years old at the time.

According to Lazard Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Ken Jacobs, he died Thursday night in New York.

On November 23, 1932, Michel David-Weill was born into a Jewish household. Pierre David-Weill (1900–1975) was the chairman of Lazard Frères, and Berthe Haardt was his mother. Alexandre Weill [fr], his great-grandfather, worked for Lazard Freres, a business co-founded by his cousins Alexandre, Elie, and Simon Lazard.

His grandfather, David David-Weill, was made a partner in the firm in 1900. Pierre David-Weill, his father, joined the firm as a partner in 1927.

David-Weill was separated from his father during World War II, who was in New York City, and stayed with his mother in occupied France. At the age of 11, he hid with his mother and younger sister in the French village of Béduer (Lot, southwestern France), where they were baptized and raised as Catholics (his father Pierre would later convert to Catholicism in 1965).

He and his family relocated to New York City after World War II ended.

David-Weill attended the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris and the Lycée Français de New York.
