On Thursday afternoon, a man was shot and murdered in a mall in Prince George’s County. According to authorities, this was not a “random act” of gun violence.
A representative for the city reported that the individual, who has only been described as an adult male, was shot inside the Mall of Prince George’s in Hyattsville at around 4 o’clock. According to officials, the individual passed away there.
The Hyattsville Police Department announced on social media just before 5 o’clock that there was no longer a danger to the neighborhood and that officers had taken control of the situation. Police issued a warning to stay away from the area and promised to share more details as soon as they are available.
“While this is an isolated incident, we are nonetheless troubled,” a spokesperson for the Mall at Prince George’s said in a statement, adding that they are “working collaboratively” with law enforcement as officers investigate.
The Mall at Prince George’s can be found in Hyattsville at 3500 East-West Highway. According to the mall’s website, it was announced that it would close for the remainder of Thursday and reopen at 10 a.m. on Friday.
When a 22-year-old man was shot and died inside a clothes store at the mall earlier this year in March, it shook the mall and the neighborhood. As a result, police increased patrols.
