Justin Pierre James Trudeau, born December 25, 1971, is a Canadian politician who has been the Liberal Party’s leader since 2013 and Canada’s 23rd and current prime minister since 2015. Trudeau, the eldest son of Pierre Trudeau, is Canada’s second-youngest prime minister after Joe Clark. He is also the first former prime minister’s child or other relative.

The Cannabis Act, which he signed into law during his first term as prime minister, legalized marijuana for recreational use. He also tried to reform Senate appointments by creating the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments and implemented the federal carbon tax. In terms of foreign policy, the Trudeau administration signed the Paris Climate Change Agreement and negotiated trade agreements including the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire have three children: Xavier, born in 2007, Ella-Grace, born in 2009, and Hadrien, born in 2014. Trudeau first met Sophie Grégoire as a child in Montreal; Grégoire was a classmate and childhood friend of Trudeau’s youngest brother, Michel. They reconnected as adults in June 2003, when Grégoire, a Quebec television personality at the time, was assigned to be Trudeau’s co-host for a charity ball; they began dating a few months later. Trudeau and Grégoire were married on May 28, 2005, at Montreal’s Sainte-Madeleine d’Outremont Church.
