Joshua David Shapiro is an American lawyer and politician who has served as the Attorney General of Pennsylvania since 2017.
He previously served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and as chairman of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners as a member of the Democratic Party.
Shapiro is the Democratic Party’s candidate for governor of Pennsylvania in 2022.
Shapiro began a worldwide letter-writing campaign on behalf of Russian Jewish refuseniks at a young age.
He went to Akiba Hebrew Academy in Merion Station, Pennsylvania, which is now known as Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy.
He majored in political science at the University of Rochester, and in 1992, he became the first freshman to be elected as the student body president of the university.
Shapiro ran for the 153rd district in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2004. He defeated the Republican nominee, former Congressman Jon D. Fox, by a ten-point margin.
In 2006, 2008, and 2010, he was re-elected.Following the 2006 elections, Democrats gained a one-seat majority in the Pennsylvania State House, but the party was unable to unite behind a candidate for Speaker of the House.
Shapiro was instrumental in brokering a deal that saw moderate Republican Dennis O’Brien elected Speaker of the House. Shapiro was later named deputy speaker of the house by O’Brien.
