Thomas Joseph Beckwith was born on January 28, 1955, in Opelika, Alabama, the United States of America. Not much is known regarding his mother Majorie, however, his father Bill Beckwith served as the director of ticket sales at Auburn University in public relations.
Concerning his educational background, Joe Beckwith attended Auburn High School, where he played for the school team. He proceeded to Auburn University where he was a batboy and played for the Auburn Tigers from 1974 to 1977. He was named a league all-star and was named to the All-SEC team in 1976 and 1977.
Joe Beckwith was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second round of the 1977 draft. He played for two of their minor league affiliates and made his Major League Baseball debut on July 21, 1979, when he was 24 years old. At the age of 31, he played his final major league game on September 30, 1986.
Following his retirement, Joe Beckwith worked in the concrete industry with Ready Mix USA/CEMEX and served as the manager of the Alabama Dixie Youth team that won the state championship in 2004. A recipient of several significant honours, he was honoured in Auburn’s Tiger Trail Walk of Fame in 2006. He was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
Joe Beckwith became the first graduate of Auburn High to be enshrined there. He passed away on May 22, 2021, in Auburn, Alabama, in the United States of America at the age of 66. He was a victim of colon cancer for the two-and-a-half years prior to his death.
