Williams was born on September 26, 1981, to Oracene Price and Richard Williams in Saginaw, Michigan.
She is the youngest of Price’s five daughters, which also include full older sister Venus and half-sisters Yetunde, Lyndrea, and Isha Price. Furthermore, she has a minimum of seven paternal half-siblings.
She began playing tennis at the age of four after the family relocated to Compton, California, when the kids were still very little.
Her father taught her and her sister Venus at home. Her other instructors included Richard Williams, a Compton man who shared her father’s name and later formed The Venus and Serena Williams Tennis/Tutorial Academy, in addition to him and her mother, who served as their official coaches.
