Gene, his father, was a former Army Major. When Michael was only nine years old, his family relocated to the army post in Mannheim, West Germany. His father recognized his ability as an athlete. So Michael went back to Houston to live with his uncle Arthur Strahan, a retired football player.
Michael attended Westbury High School in Houston and played football there. After graduating from high school, Michael continued his football career at Texas Southern University (TSU), where he was successful for four years.
He had 103 tackles and 9 sacks during that time before earning his broadcast journalism degree. He began his professional football career in the spring of 1993 when the New York Giants selected him in the second round of that year’s NFL Draft.
He really began to thrive in 1997 during his fifth season. Michael Strahan finally rediscovered his defensive groove in the 2001 season, compiling a record-breaking 22.5 sacks. This followed a few failed and injury-riddled seasons. By 2006, he had totaled 132.5 sacks. He announced his NFL retirement on June 9 of the ensuing year.
Just a few days after his retirement, on June 24, 2008, Fox Network announced that Michael Strahan has been hired for their NFL Sunday pregame program. In 2009, he had an appearance in the Fox comedy Brothers. In 2016, Michael Strahan resigned from Live! With Kelly and Michael and committed himself fully to the cast of Good Morning America.
In the same year, he was selected to host The $100,000 Pyramid, another game program on ABC. He accepted the network’s offer to host Fox NFL Thursday, the pregame show, in 2018 because Fox Network had already acquired the television rights to Thursday Night Football.
