Humphrey DeForest, also known as Bogie, was an American stage and film actor. His roles in Classical Hollywood films established him as an American cultural icon. Bogart was named the greatest male star of classic American cinema by the American Film Institute in 1999.
Bogart began his career in Broadway shows before beginning his film career with Up the River (1930) for Fox, where he played gangsters in supporting roles for the next decade. He was praised for his performance as Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest (1936), but he was cast secondary to other Warner Bros. actors who received leading roles. Bogart also received praise for his portrayal of gangster Hugh “Baby Face” Martin in William Wyler’s Dead End (1937).

Bogart became a father at the age of 49, when his wife, Lauren Bacall, gave birth to Stephen Humphrey Bogart on January 6, 1949, while filming Tokyo Joe. The name was inspired by Steve, Bogart’s character in To Have and Have Not. Stephen went on to become an author and biographer, and he hosted a Turner Classic Movies television special about his father. Leslie Howard Bogart, the couple’s daughter, was born on August 23, 1952. Her first and middle names honor Bogart’s friend and co-star in The Petrified Forest, Leslie Howard.
