Harvey Kirck was a news anchor in Canada. Kirck was born in Uno Park, near New Liskeard, Ontario, and moved to Toronto with his family in 1943. His radio career began in 1948 at CJIC in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and continued with CKBB in Barrie, Ontario, CKXL in Calgary, Alberta, and CKEY and CHUM in Toronto in the 1940s and 1950s.
In 1960, he joined CHCH in Hamilton, and in 1963, he moved to CTV. He joined CTV National News as co-anchor in 1963, replacing Baden Langton, who had moved to ABC News. He co-anchored with Peter Jennings and Ab Douglas at first, but when Jennings moved to ABC, Kirck became the sole anchor, with Douglas doing inserts from Ottawa.
Kirck was joined by Lloyd Robertson in 1976, forming an anchoring team that lasted until Kirck’s retirement from broadcasting in 1984. He hosted W5 from 1984 to 1987. From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, he also hosted Sketches of Our Town. Kirck was one of North America’s longest-serving newsmen, and he was inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2000. He died two years later, at the age of 73, of congestive heart failure.
