George Maxwell Alagiah OBE is a British newsreader, journalist, and television news presenter who was born in November 1955. He has been the primary presenter of GMT on BBC World News since its introduction on 1 February 2010 and has been the main presenter of BBC News at Six since 3 December 2007.
Alagiah, an expert on Africa and the developing world, has interviewed Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, among others.
Other documentaries and features include reports for the Assignment programme on why affirmative action in America is a “Lost Cause,” for the BBC’s Newsnight programme on Saddam Hussein’s genocidal campaign against the Kurds of northern Iraq, and a piece on the last reunion of Dunkirk veterans.
