He has translated ancient Chinese and modern Japanese literature into English. Snyder was a professor at the University of California, Davis for many years and a member of the California Arts Council for a time.

Snyder married Alison Gass during his Reed years, but they divorced after seven months. In 1960, he wed Joanne Kyger; they divorced in 1965. In 1967, he married Masa Uehara in Japan, and the couple produced two sons, Kai in 1968 and Gen in 1969.

In 1989, Snyder and Masa divorced. Snyder married Carole Koda in 1991 and lived with her until her 2007 death from cancer.
