Jim’s parents are Shirley and John Jordan. Jim Jordan and Jeff Jordan are the couple’s two sons.
Jim Jordan graduated from Graham High School in 1982, where he also wrestled. He won state championships all four years of high school, compiling a 156-1 win-loss record.
He won two NCAA Division I wrestling championships at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he later enrolled. Jordan won the NCAA championship matches at 134 pounds (61 kg) in 1985 and 1986.
He received his bachelor’s degree in economics in 1986. He was disqualified from the 1988 US Olympic wrestling trials after losing the 126-137 pound (57-62 kg) featherweight semifinal contest.
Jordan earned a master’s degree in education from Ohio State University and a Juris Doctorate from Capital University Law School. In a 2018 interview, Jordan claimed he never took the bar exam.
