He began to consider a different professional route after two years there. “I told [clients and firm partners] that I was thinking of going into politics and administration, but no one said, ‘Don’t leave!’ so I figured I wasn’t a very good lawyer,” he jokes.

Rubenstein was the chief counsel to Senator Birch Bayh on the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments from 1975 to 1976.

He went on to work for Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign. Rubenstein was named deputy assistant to the President for domestic policy when Carter assumed office in 1977. Carter’s term ended prematurely four years later when he lost reelection.
