Christopher Scott Murphy (born August 3, 1973) is an American lawyer, author, and politician who has represented Connecticut in the United States Senate since 2013.

He was a member of the Democratic Party in the United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2013, representing Connecticut’s 5th congressional district.

Murphy was a member of both chambers of the Connecticut General Assembly before being elected to Congress, spending two terms in the Connecticut House of Representatives (1999–2003) and the Connecticut Senate (2003–2007).

In 2012, Murphy ran for the United States Senate after long-time incumbent Joe Lieberman declared in January 2011 that he would not seek re-election to a fifth term in Congress.

In the Democratic primary, he defeated former Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz, and in the general election, he defeated Republican contender Linda McMahon for the open seat. Murphy, who was 39 years old at the time, was the 113th Congress’s youngest senator.

In August of 2007, Murphy and his wife Catherine tied the knot. They have two sons together.
