Avery wanted to learn how to play an instrument, so he chose the saxophone at the store.

According to a 2013 interview, he was a natural from the start, learning “harder tunes within the first month of playing.” President Barack Obama sent Avery a letter praising him on his musical achievements.

Avery was born 24 weeks early, weighing only 1 pound 8 ounces. According to his official bio, he was “not expected to live.” In 2013, his mother, Lisa, remarked, “His little finger wouldn’t even wrap completely around my pointer finger.” Entrees is the title of his debut EP.
