Following Abbott’s defeat, Dutton became largely seen as the leader of the Liberal Party’s conservative wing, and he was mentioned as a prospective leader.

Dutton unsuccessfully challenged Turnbull for the leadership in August 2018, following a period of negative opinion polling for the Coalition.

After Turnbull chose to resign, he was beaten by Scott Morrison in a second leadership ballot days later. Morrison kept him as Minister for Home Affairs, and in March 2021, he became Minister for Defence and Leader of the House.
